About

Voice lessons are focused on building a strong foundation in classical technique through attention to posture, breathing, and vowel placement. The work is rigorous, individualized, and full of continual guidance to improve resonance, strength, and confidence, while relaxing tensions.  Guidance in musical expression and interpretation, and acting training are part of repertoire study.  I use the Kodaly Method to teach sight singing for those wishing to improve reading skills.

I am a former Staff Singer for the La Jolla Symphony Chorus, soprano soloist for the Congregational Church of La Jolla, and an active recitalist.  I have performed as soloist with La Jolla Symphony & Chorus, Palomar Orchestra and Chorale, and Mendocino Music Festival. I enjoy creating original collaborative shows which introduce classical literature to audiences of all ages, such as "Tales from a Pychiatrist's Couch", featuring an original dramatic and comedic story told through art songs and arias.  I am an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).  My voice teachers have been Ann Chase, Virginia Sublett, and Sarah Agler;  vocal coach, Ines Irawati; and acting coach, Laura Bozanich.

Voice students have performed lead and supporting roles in community musical theatre productions, and solos with La Jolla Symphony & Chorus, Orchestra Nova and others.  Some have won and placed in regional competitions, including the Ben Vereen Musical Theatre Award,  competing nationally in the Jimmy's,  and National Association of Teacher's of Singing Competition. Many have been accepted at leading universities in voice performance, musical theatre, music composition, and music therapy.

Piano instruction emphasizes a strong foundation in technical and musicianship skills through attention to posture, hand position, strength building, tone, touch, theory, sightreading, scales, chords, arpeggios, and primarily classical literature. Students are motivated to learn increasingly advanced literature as pieces are carefully selected with attention to their growing abilities and preferences. Popular music, duets, ragtime, and original compositions may be included. Students find joy in their increasing abilities and widening range of musical expression.

I have served as professional accompanist at Palomar College, San Diego North Coast Singers, Pacific Ridge School, and Coast Kids Theatre. I participate in the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program, offering yearly examinations for interested students.  My piano teachers have been Betty Snofke and Celeste Meister at Macalester College.
